The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted authorization for the first over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid software designed for use with compatible versions of Apple’s AirPods Pro.
Earlier in the week, Apple announced that its AirPods Pro 2 could be “transformed” into a personalized hearing aid through an upcoming software update. This innovation allows users to enhance specific sounds in real time, particularly speech or environmental elements, offering improved hearing support without the need for traditional hearing aids.

Starting this fall, the new hearing health features will be available for AirPods Pro 2 users across more than 100 countries and regions. Once the software is installed and customized to meet individual hearing needs, AirPods Pro models will effectively function as OTC hearing aids. The system is tailored for individuals aged 18 and over with mild to moderate hearing impairment, offering amplified sound quality. The FDA emphasized that this development is a significant step in addressing hearing loss, which affects millions of Americans.
Michelle Tarver, acting director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, pointed out that hearing loss is a major public health issue, with over 30 million U.S. adults reporting some level of impairment. She emphasized that the introduction of OTC hearing aid software enhances the availability, accessibility, and appeal of hearing support solutions. Factors such as aging, exposure to loud environments, and certain medical conditions are among the most common causes of hearing loss, and this new feature represents a more inclusive and accessible path for many who need assistance.
In 2022, the FDA approved the sale of OTC hearing aids, allowing adults with mild to moderate hearing impairments to purchase hearing aids directly from stores or online retailers without the need for medical exams or prescriptions. Apple’s new Hearing Aid Feature, which received FDA clearance on Thursday, takes this innovation further by offering a software-only solution. The application is set up using an iOS device like an iPhone, with the customization process pulling data from the iOS HealthKit to adjust hearing levels to the user’s unique profile.
Future Implications
The FDA’s approval of Apple’s hearing aid software marks a significant milestone in the intersection of consumer technology and healthcare. With the integration of hearing aid capabilities into a widely popular consumer product like AirPods Pro, Apple is opening up new avenues for accessible healthcare through its hardware and software ecosystem.
This is also an illustration of a growing trend in the medical technology sector—adapting and using mainstream consumer devices to provide health solutions. The ability to transform an everyday gadget into a medical tool could revolutionize how people approach hearing loss, reducing stigma and increasing adoption rates.
