A method to access genetic information in blood samples and find correlations with mental health problems

by Julia Moióli, FAPESP Schematic of the study design, illustrating the longitudinal and cross-sectional approaches. Longitudinal design: the dotted blue lines represent the two analyzed time points, Wave 1 and Wave 2. The colored horizontal linesrepresent the differences in case–control status between both time points, which was the criteria to define each trajectory group. Sample sizes for...

Glutathione Delivery via Iontophoresis Increases Gluthathione Levels in Blood Samples

Glutathione is a mitochondrial antioxidant, and additional antioxidant capacity in mitochondria appears to be beneficial to long-term health, improving mitochondrial function and overall health. Mitochondriaconduct the energetic process of producing ATP, used to power the cell, with a flux of oxidative molecules as a side-effect. With age, mitochondria tend to become less efficient and produce more oxidizing molecules, harmful to the...

Blood test offers early warning of chemotherapy-related heart problems

by Experimental Biology which chemotherapies can cause cardiotoxicity. The research team identified biomarkers and miRNAs that can provide early warning when this process is underway. Credit: Hari Vishal Lakhani, Marshall University Scientists have identified a collection of biomarkers that together signal that a person’s cancer treatment may be harming their heart. After further validation, the...

Filtered coffee helps prevent type 2 diabetes, show biomarkers in blood samples

CHALMERS UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY Coffee can help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes – but only filtered coffee, rather than boiled coffee. New research from Chalmers University of Technology and Umeå University, both in Sweden, show that the choice of preparation method influences the health effects of coffee. Many previous studies have shown...

Chip to Evaluate Health of Immune System from Blood Sample

OCTOBER 17TH, 2019 MEDGADGET EDITORSDIAGNOSTICS, MEDICINE, PATHOLOGY, PUBLIC HEALTH, SPORTS MEDICINE Knowing how well a patient’s immune system is functioning may be very useful in diagnosing a disease and guiding the course of therapy. Researchers from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore are making this a reality, having developed a hybrid chip that assesses the health...

Magnetic Beads Strip Blood Samples to Allow Circulating Tumor Cell Isolation

Researchers at the University of Georgia have developed a microfluidic chip to isolate circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from bloodsamples. Unlike other devices, this new chip uses magnetic microbeads to strip all the cells from the blood, leaving only the CTCs, in a technique the researchers have called “integrated ferrohydrodynamic cell separation”. The device is highly efficient and isolates almost all the CTCs in a blood sample (over 99%)....
